U.S.: BAT Lawyers May Have Helped Hide Documents, WSJ Says

Washington, Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Justice Department has filed a sealed court brief accusing lawyers for BAT Industries Plc's Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. of possibly participating in a criminal plan to hide information about nicotine manipulation and levels from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Wall Street Journal reported citing unidentified people familiar with the case. The brief, filed last month in the federal court in Washington, D.C., is part of a criminal investigation of whether Brown & Williamson lied to the FDA and other regulators about its use of high-nicotine tobacco leaf and its manipulation of nicotine levels in cigarettes, the paper said. Brown & Williamson declined to comment on the brief, the paper said.

Last month, BAT and RJR Nabisco Corp. withdrew from negotiations between tobacco companies and states attorneys general.
